Taxi, radio cab and transfer services in Athens and throughout Greece

A comprehensive on-line guide with useful telephone/fax numbers, Web links, E-mail addresses and other useful information

Looking for a taxi or transfer service? Look no further!

Looking for a cab? Fed up of being ripped off? Do you wish to find a reliable driver who can take care of your transfer to/from the port, airport, hotel or second home?

"Fare is fair"!

When you travel to Greece, how would you feel if you knew that you will have a friendly driver who will pick you up, take care of your luggage and drive you to your destination with a smile, great service and a fare everyone else in Greece pays?

Peace of mind

If you are planning your trip to Greece and are looking for a reliable taxi or transfer service, you can now rest assured that you can plan your journey without being harassed by taxi drivers by choosing one of the service providers below.

A few useful tips

But before you start your journey, you should be aware of the following:

  1. Every taxi in the greater Athens and Piraeus areas must have dark yellow licence plates with black letters starting with "TAA" or "TAB" followed by a hyphen and a four-digit number. Unlicensed "mini-cab" services like the ones offered in London are not allowed in Athens. Between midnight and 5 am, expect to pay double, i.e. the normal tariff charged before midnight times two.

  2. Taxis in Athens and Piraeus are yellow and bear a very thin blue stripe right beneath the car windows. Taxis in other cities usually have other colours (grey, Bordeaux red, etc.).

  3. DO NOT PAY ANYTHING UNLESS THE DRIVER GIVES YOU A PROPER RECEIPT! Every taxi driver is obliged -- by law -- to give you a receipt.

  4. CONSULT THE GREEK TOURIST POLICE (TEL.: 171) WHEN IN DOUBT OR IN CASE YOU ARE EXPERIENCING ANY LANGUAGE BARRIERS, "DIRTY TRICKS" AND/OR HARASSMENT.

  5. If you have any suspicion whatsoever that your taxi driver has overcharged you, ask for assistance at your hotel or other destination before paying the fare. If you have any complaints of being ripped off or have any other questions, contact the Taxi Owners' Confederation of Greece (4, Pireos Street, Omonia, Athens) on +30 210 523 6904. Fax: +30 210 523 5198. E-mail: info@hellastaxi.gr. Do not forget to write down the driver's name, the time and date of the journey, the pick-up and drop-off points, the licence plate number of the taxi and the fare charged by your taxi driver.

  6. A booking fee of EUR 1.00 will be added to the metre if you call for a radio taxi.

  7. Current taxi fares (in Greek): http://www.hellastaxi.gr/timologio.html.

Company profile: Athens Direct

Athens Direct

The idea of Athens Direct was formulated in the summer of 2000, when its founder Stathis Perdikis invited twenty-four of his friends from the US and Europe to a sailing trip in the Greek islands. Since he could not personally pick up all his friends from the airport, he looked for alternatives. His options were very limited since the metro did not reach the airport and the public bus did not pass anywhere nearby his house. The only direct way was by taxi, which most of his friends ended up taking. However, most of them faced certain unpleasant circumstances; some paid more than what they should; others rode with taxi drivers who did not speak English, making communication difficult; a few took older taxis and experienced an uncomfortable ride; some girls who arrived late at night did not feel safe taking a taxi, but had no other option. The guests faced similar problems on the way back to the airport.

Athens Direct founder assumed that many visitors, especially non-Greeks, probably faced similar problems. Based on that belief, he set out to establish a company with a mission "to become the premiere transportation provider for people seeking to reserve a safe, comfortable, and reliable door-to-door ride to or from Athens airport". One year later that business proposition won the second place in the prestigious Ideodromio business plan competition. The award of EUR 7,000 turned into the seed funding that transformed Athens Direct from a script into a real company on its way to fulfill its mission.

The present

From these humble beginnings, Athens Direct is now advancing quickly to become a major player in the transportation and hospitality industries in Greece.

Currently, the company offers quality transportation alternatives in Athens and major cities in Greece, using standard and premium taxis, executive sedans, limousines, shuttles, buses, helicopters and private jets. Through its affiliation with BostonCoach, a global provider of executive sedan, limousine, and group transportation services for both business and leisure travelers, Athens Direct has access to transportation services in over 450 cities world-wide, taking its customers wherever they need to be, whenever they need to go, day or night.

Moreover, Athens Direct offers a wide range of travel services, from airline tickets and hotel reservations, to alternative tourism and incentive travel. The company serves both the Greek and international markets, providing services to individuals, organisations and corporations.

Looking ahead

Athens' Direct current goal is to establish the first Airport Shuttle Service in Greece. It will use shuttle-buses to transport individuals and groups, who have a reservation, to and from Athens' airport. If successful, the business model will be implemented in major travel destinations in Greece and its neighbouring countries. For this project, Athens Direct received a EUR 50,000 grant from the Hellenic Ministry of Development and the European Union. Besides the Airport Shuttle Service, the grant also endorses Athens Direct to develop and promote additional door-to-door transportation services, as well as traditional and contemporary travel services.

Athens Direct offers a wide range of vehicles, from taxis to helicopters, in order to meet all your transportation needs. All vehicles are meticulously maintained to ensure that they operate safely and reliably. Our domestic and international partners also own late model vehicles that are fully insured and kept in excellent condition. [Fleet]

And last, but not least...

  • Surviving taxis in Athens, Greece
A rather frustrated Greek-Canadian professor and frequent visitor of Athens shares very practical information in both Greek and English on this subject, which mainly refers to his experience in Athens in the summer of 2003.

  • Taxis in Crete and Greece:
Taxis are quite cheap in Greece, so they can be considered a very convenient way of moving around in Crete. Using a taxi in the cities of Heraklion or Chania will rarely cost more than EUR 3.

Enjoy your trip!
