Franchising: The Challenges Ahead By Alexander Lamnidis, President, The Franchising Association of Greece As vast changes occur on the economic and political front, new business tools that once seemed excellent soon become worthless or even extinct. Franchising, a relatively new tool of doing business in Greece, has been helped enormously from the economic environment of the late 1990s. Today, the 60 members of the Greek Franchise Association have a collective sales turnover of USD 1.2 billion and employ more than 15,000 people. Nevertheless, franchising companies face challenges and growing competition—from other franchising companies and from new market entrants. In fact, many companies are adopting new ways of organisation similar to franchising. The Franchising Concept On the basis of contractual relationships, franchising means close co-operation between a franchisor and several franchisees to attain a common goal of profitable business expansion. Efficient allocation of tasks and a procedural organisation are the basis for success. Franchising has been an unbeatable business formula but franchising systems will need plenty of adaptability skills to survive. Network organisations and franchises will play a major role in future organisational formations. Networks grow in existing and emerging lines of business, and are expected to have a major impact on existing franchise systems. Chain building continues to be a key issue because an ever-growing number of companies are becoming part of one or more chains. As this trend continues, it will be more difficult for the real independent entrepreneur or small franchise systems to survive. This places an additional burden on the franchising community: to organise business in a way so that individuals become more entrepreneurial. Presently, chain building is based primarily on marketing and related economies of scale, but chain building in the future will be based on minimisation of transaction costs and developments in information and communication technology and logistics. Soon, increasing competition will force networks to focus more on the minimisation of logistics costs, forging new relationships in the franchise industry on its road to greater efficiency and higher effectiveness. Up to now, the main forces behind the success of franchising have been organisational effectiveness and cost advantage on commercial, financial and management fields. Now, these parameters need to be re-examined under a new perspective to continue on the road to effectiveness. Chain management will lead to the redesign (of functions) in the distribution chain of goods and services by eliminating all links that do not have a definite added value. In simple terms, this means that in Europe, and in Greece in particular, several franchise systems will run the risk of becoming extinct. I am confident that a franchise company sufficiently armed with capital and know-how to tackle these challenges will have a definite advantage over a centralised structure. Why? Because tightly centralised organisations are expensive to run due to the high degree of bureaucracy and the low motivation of individuals. Franchise organisations, on the other hand, are lower-cost organisations that run on mutually converging interests and the survival instinct of entrepreneurial spirit. The Role of Technology Technology is also changing business models, in and outside of the franchising world. Information and communication technologies make markets more transparent and enable consumers to make better-informed decisions. [full story...] [premium content] Franchising Association of Greece The Franchise Association of Greece was the result of an effort which began in 1996 through the initiative of some people who, having foreseen the possibility of development of franchising, realised there was a need for a body that would both express common views and could be used as the driving force for further development of franchising in Greece. Wind is one of the cheapest, cleanest and safest forms of energy. It does not pollute the atmosphere. Greece was among the first countries to use wind power back in the late 1970s and 1980s, but there are two main reasons it subsequently fell behind. There are financial incentives within the European Union's Third Community Support Framework for investors. Any company, including Public Power Corp. SA (PPC), can get grants of at least 30% to install renewable energy plants. At the end of 2002, Greece had just 276 megawatts installed, compared to Germany's staggering lead of 12,001 megawatts and peers Italy and Spain with 785 megawatts and 4,830 megawatts respectively. Speaking to reporters, to present a review of the ministry's actions during his first year in office, Salagoudis said that in December 2004, Greece ranked sixth in a world list of countries attractive for investments on windpower parks, and eighth on the world composite index for Renewable Energy Sources, according to a list by Ernst & Young. The Deputy Minister of Development said that the ministry significantly accelerated licensing procedures for building Renewable Energy stations in Greece, with issued licences totalling 24.71% of total licenses issued since 1994 in the country. "These facts show that something is changing. The international investment community is looking at Greece with confidence once again. It is our responsibility to continue this trend," Salagoudis said. Source: ANA.
