Praktiker expands to Bulgaria Establishes eighth company outside its domestic market
Mr. Michael Trapp appointed new Country Manager August 8th, 2003 -- Kirkel, Germany based Praktiker Bau- und Heimwerkermarkte AG, currently one of the leading D-I-Y and home improvement companies outside Germany with 53 stores in seven European countries, is pressing ahead with its international expansion plans. In the middle of 2004, the first store will open in Bulgaria, in the capital Sofia, a city with a population in the region of 1.2 million. In the medium-term, Praktiker aims to be the market leader in Bulgaria: "With over 8 million inhabitants and a high potential for growth, Bulgaria closes the gap for Praktiker between Greece, Romania and Turkey, where we are already market leader," says Mr. Michael Arnold, director of Praktiker AG and responsible for the internationalisation of Praktiker, about the reasons behind the most recent overseas activities. The head of the new national company and therefore Country Manager of Bulgaria will be Mr. Michael Trapp (41), one of the most experienced international managers at Praktiker AG. Trapp’s previous postings have included Greece and he most recently enjoyed success as the Country Manager for Poland. His successor in Poland will be Mr. Franz Ring (53), Polish by birth, who has held various positions in the home improvements sector for over 20 years. His most recent job was as divisional director for purchasing for Praktiker in Poland. Praktiker Bau- und Heimwerkermarkte AG is one of the leading companies in the D-I-Y and home improvements sector in Europe. The company currently has 346 stores, of which 293 are in Germany, and 53 in seven further countries. In 2002, the company achieved a net turnover of approx. EUR 2.6 billion.
